Belittled Much?

We've all experienced it at one time or another, and I can’t help but wonder about the peculiar phenomenon of people who seem to specialize in belittling others' very existence. Is there some secret seminar I missed where they hand out certificates in the art of belittling? Or perhaps there's a hidden competition for the most condescending comment of the day? Do we invite this into our lives? Mis amores, the short answer is NO. It's important to remember that being belittled is never the victim's fault. No matter what the factors are that made them a target, no one deserves to be belittled.

It's rather astonishing to witness how some individuals belittle those around them. Does it somehow elevate their self-worth? Does it make them feel in control or give them a sense of pleasure? Is this how they point out your deficiencies so you can do better? Or do they just want to make you feel bad?

Those of us on the receiving end of these barrages often question their worth, much like a shirt relegated to the back of the closet because it doesn't quite fit right. The sting of a well-placed barb can make us doubt the brilliance within us, causing us to second-guess our fashion choices and life decisions.

I can't help but think: What if we could all exchange those belittling certificates for confidence badges? What if we celebrated each other's uniqueness instead of attempting to standardize one another? Perhaps then, we could transform those condescending conversations into uplifting ones and turn the dimming of lights into a radiant celebration of the dazzling mosaic that is the human experience. How about we just do it now!

If you're being belittled

Don’t take it personally.

Walk away.

Don’t engage, it will only encourage them to continue.

Focus on your strengths.

Do things that make you feel good. Self-care is always a treat.

If you belittle others

Don’t! Instead, be mindful of your words and actions. Build people up. Surround yourself with positive people and emulate them.
